The Shop: Cafe Con Libros
Crown Heights: 724 Prospect Place
This store is about as opposite from the classic “Women and Women First” Portlandia sketch as a feminist bookstore can be! No dust and must here-- the volumes of Libros are new and fresh, with ads for virtual book clubs and readings. Cafe Con Libros manages to stick quite a few books in their tiny space with a selection focused on themes of race, gender, activism, and identity. Like a lot of other bookstores in Brooklyn, it’s also a coffee shop with all the alternative milks this little lactose intolerant boy could dream of!
What I Got:
Space Invaders: A Novel
Chilean author Nona Fernandez’s novels Space Invaders and the Twilight Zone have peaked my interest in quite a few previous bookstore visits-- I mean who could resist reflections on the legacy of autocracy of the Pinochet regime cloaked in retro nerd glory? (Okay maybe a lot of people could resist this… but not me.)
An Iced Chai:
It was tasty.
