The Shop: Galaxy Collectibles
Park Slope, BK: 431 5th Ave
Park Slope’s Galaxy Collectibles is equal parts toy store and comic store, a potent cocktail for superhero nerds. It’s rare to see a comic store with no musty long boxes in sight-- instead pristine shelves and displays stacked with new releases, graphic novels, and a whole dang wall of Funko Pop figures! I have truly never seen so many Funkos in one place. I’m not a huge toy nerd but if I were, this spot would be absolutely lethal to my wallet with its plastic superheroes from every era and fictional universe!
What I Got:
Black Hammer Visions #4
Dark Horse has been killing it with these guest written Black Hammer tie-ins. I don’t even read Black Hammer but the recent Patton Oswalt penned, Ghost World inspired Visions ish was enough to put this title on my radar. #4 is by Mariko Tamaki, who has become one of the hottest talents in comics since her immaculate graphic novel This One Summer blew everyone’s minds (mine included) in 2014.
HAHA #3
The success of W. Maxwell Price’s deliciously spooky Ice Cream Man gave him a blank check for other comic projects. The result: HAHA, a clown themed anthology equal parts dark and goofy. I was unable to snatch the first two issues before they got seized up by collectors so I was extra psyched to find issue #3, a completely dialogue-free story from the point of view of a mime!
Spawn #317
317 issues deep and running, Spawn is the longest running independent comic of all time! And comics/toys legend Todd MacFarlane is still writing it nearly 30 years later!? Crazy. Despite my middle school goth phase, I was never a Spawn guy. But after grabbing a recent issue I was surprised with how crispy the art and storytelling was, and really enjoyed it. So I guess I’m a Spawn guy now?
