The Shop: Sweet Pickle Books
Lower East Side, Manhattan: 47 Orchard Street
A stone’s throw away from the Williamsburg Bridge, Sweet Pickle Books harnesses the essential Lower East Side elements (brine, kitsch) to make a unique and delightful store. This narrow storefront on Orchard street specializes in used books and pickles. You can even trade a donation of your used books for a jar of pickles in the store! The selection (of books) is eclectic, with charming handwritten genre tags to let you know what’s up– see “evil realities” pictured above. The selection of pickles, also great!
What I got:
Oryx and Crake
I’ve read a handful of Margaret Atwood novels, and every single one has at least one passage that completely shatters me to the core. Atwood is intense, incisive, and a revolutionary writer. Oryx and Crake is the first in Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy, taking on environmental themes in the wake of an apocalypse brought on by an… unstoppable virus type thing… wait a second do I really want to read this right now? (Too late, already started.)
Pickles
I’m a pickle fiend but these dills aren’t for me– they’re a housewarming present for lovely friends Haley & Harry! Mazel on the new digs y’all!
