The Shop: Action City Comics
Greenpoint, Brooklyn: 570 Manhattan Avenue
Action City Comics sits in a vibrantly colored storefront at the edge of McCarren Park. The small store is action packed with western comics, trade paperbacks, graphic novels and toys. The comic selection sticks to the big boys— DC and Marvel are well represented as well as their smaller competitors Image and Dynamite. If you’re looking for that local artsy shit, you should skip this one and head over to Desert Island. This shop feels like a classic comic shop with a laid back vibe and staff who have plenty of opinions about the Incredible Hulk. If you love capes, fly on over to this shop.
What I got:
The Last Comic Book on the Left
I’m a fan of Last Podcast on the Left and their irreverent take on all kinds of bizarre, macabre topics from recent history. Spinning their brand off into the extremely lucrative realm of indie comics, the hosts serve as editors for this vibrant anthology of new horror/comedy fiction. While some of the segments in this volume feature the hosts or their writing talents, most are by up and coming comic illustrators like Courtney Menard, who's been cooking up some funky covers at Image recently. Bonus badassery: the volume I copped is signed by the one and only Marcus Parks!!
