The Shop: Better Read than Dead Books / Burly Coffee
Bed-Stuy, BK: 90 Kosciusko St.
The vibes of this coffee shop/bookstore hybrid are impeccable. I arrived on a recent afternoon to Biggie blasting on nice speakers, coffee smells, a friendly cashier/barista and his even friendlier hoodie wearing dog Edward who demanded tons of pets-- I was more than happy to oblige! If it weren’t for the whole pandemic thing I would have killed several hours hanging out here. The book selection is highly eclectic and pre-loved. Not the best spot if you’re looking for something specific, but if you’re a browser like me you’re sure to find something good.
What I got:
The Golden Apples of the Sun
In case you haven’t picked up on this already, I’m a nerd. I have a real soft spot for these pulpy paperback scifi short story collections by Bradbury, Asimov, and their contemporaries-- my middle school love for these tales of robots, martians and the like are some of my first loves of reading. Since most of the OG scifi writers were prolific as all hell, there’s no shortage of these volumes floating around the used book stores, yard sales, and stoops of the universe, and I’m always delighted to find them.
