The Shop: Hey Kids Comics
Greenpoint, Brooklyn: 157 Huron Street
Around the corner from Burnt Books (and with the same owner) is Hey Kids Comics, a small local comic shop action packed with great finds. Hey Kids grew from a sidewalk operation to a real deal brick and mortar store in one of NYC’s loveliest neighborhoods. As much as I, a 30 year old man, love them, we all know that comics always have and always will be about the kids. This comic shop specializes in the kid friendly comics, with youth targeted titles from Boom! Studios, Fantagraphics, and of course the big two. No moldy dollar boxes in sight, this shop is all about nice new stuff. In addition to the comics and toys on display, the store offers a monthly membership program where kids can get a new, curated graphic novel every month.
What I got:
Santos Sisters # 2-3
Don’t let the art fool you, this comic is definitely not for kids! Santos Sisters is a magical girl superhero duo whose adventures drift frequently into absurdism. The retro art style riffs heavily on vintage Archie comics, with more than a little Love and Rockets and Madman style chaos. The Santos sisters drink, curse, and party while getting into all sorts of mayhem. The whole premise revels in the joyous stupidity of retro superhero comics and Saturday morning cartoons. The first issue was packed with all kinds of weirdness, including retro style fake ads and editorials. I had to snap up these two issues after finally seeing them in the wild.
