The Shop: Bulletproof Comics
Flatbush, Brooklyn: 2178 Nostrand Avenue
On a scorching hot day in April, I biked down to Bulletproof comics, an action packed comic store with a skate shop in the back. Bulletproof Comics has more comic books than I’ve ever seen in one place ever in my whole life— stacks of longboxes out front, floor to ceiling shelves inside, as well as folding tables with stacks and stacks of comics. Despite some disarray inside (you may have to climb over some boxes or move a ladder to access some shelves), the comics are all in excellent shape, bagged and boarded to preserve their quality. The sheer volume of this store is impressive. There’s not just comics, but manga trading cards, tees, videogames and all sorts of paraphernalia. The comic selection stays pretty heavily in the superhero zone, but there’s a decent indie shelf in the way way back and a whole shelf of Archie digests for the Archie-heads. The staff here was friendly, helpful and glowing with comic enthusiast passion! I’m deeply jealous of any young nerd growing up with this spot as their local comic store.
What I got:
Neil Young’s Greendale
I did quite a lot of digging in the back to find this obscure gem— a graphic novel written by Neil Young?? Okay, not “written” per se, but “guided by” Neil Young (whatever that means) and inspired by his Greendale album, written by Joshua Dysart and illustrated by Cliff Chiang of Paper Girls fame. The premise was too odd and the art too gorgeous for me to pass this up. Since I can no longer listen to Neil Young on Spotify, I will consume his art in comic form!
