One man’s quest to visit every cool bookstore in NYC in 2021 begins here…
The Shop: Anyone Comics
Crown Heights, Brooklyn: 1216 Union Street
For nerds like me, a small neighborhood local comic shop mere blocks from my apartment is a dream come true. Anyone has pretty much everything you’d want in a comic shop— the latest superhero issues, a strong selection of graphic novels and back issues, and a knowledge and super-friendly staff who are always psyched to speak (if perhaps a little too loudly) about their favorite titles and publishers. Though it has all the superhero standards, the selection of local and indie comics is what makes this store really shine.
What I got:
Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Blood
A twist on the classic horror anthology comic, with each story introduced by an increasingly drunk Edgar Allan Poe! A great mix of humor and macabre, perfectly brewed if that’s your cup of tea. Like other titles from Syracuse’s Ahoy comics, this series mixes comics with prose short stories which often steal the show.
Access Guide to the Black Comic Community 2020-21
Written and thoroughly researched by Anyone regulars and staff, this guide highlights Black creators, publishers, and comic store owners. It’s really cool to see how many Black artists are working on major superhero titles and indies alike (shouts to Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer). Also loved seeing a mention of my old Magnet Theater acquaintance Angelique Roche! You’re killing it Angelique!!
